About Teignmouth

Teignmouth, aptly described as the Jewel of Devon, is a characterful seaside town and one of few that still has its traditional Victorian pier. The pedestrianised, level town centre has an interesting variety of shops, restaurants and patisseries. The train station is only a mile away and there is a bus stop just outside the cottage. The beach at Teignmouth is a 15 minute walk through Mules park.

Enjoy a stroll along the promenade and admire the well-maintained Victorian facades. Follow the promenade to the east, from which the distinctive iron-oxide rich red rocks rise up to form the steep cliffs, and you will be walking alongside the route of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Atmospheric railway.

The quaint and cosy village of Shaldon lies to the west and can be reached either via the bridge or via the historic Teign pedestrian ferry.

The Minadab Cottage

The history of The Minadab Cottage

The Minadab Cottage was built in 1820 for Robert Benjamin Young. Young, born on 15th September 1773 on the Isle of Man, rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy to that of commander.

During the Battle of Trafalgar, Young was given the command of HMS Entreprenante, a small 10 gun cutter, and charged with the duty of dispatch vessel to Admiral Nelson's HMS Victory. Following the battle action and subsequent death of Admiral Nelson, Young heroically acted as messenger and rescued 161 survivors by taking his little craft close to the blazing French battleship Achille before escaping just as the ship's magazines exploded.

According to Young, he had been given the great honour of carrying the news of the victory back to England by Admiral Nelson himself. No written record has survived of such an order and accounts can be found that, in fact, it was John Lapenotiere, commander of HMS Pickle ,who delivered the dispatches. Other accounts record that Lord Collingwood sent Young to Faro, Portugal, with dispatches announcing the death of Nelson and the victory at Trafalgar. For this, Young received the gold medal, the thanks of Parliament, a sword of Honour from the Patriotic Fund and an honorary augmentation to his arms.

The Minadab Cottage was built in the "cottage ornee" style based on Horace Walpole's Thames-side villa at Strawberry Hill, Twickenham. Walpole set the a fashion for rural Gothic-style retreats. A number were built by active and retired colonial administrators and military men who liked verandahs, spacious lawns and the sunny climate of Devon.

Commander Young designed The Minadab Cottage to resemble a ship as much as possible, the east side being the fore , and the west side the aft. The upper floor was reached by the means of a rope ladder. The round cobbled cellar has niches for the storage of rum casks, and larger alcoves for general storage. It is said that a secret tunnel ran from the cobbled cellar to the beach and it was means though which, many years ago, a previous owner returned home from sea unexpectedly and caught his wife with her lover!

The Minadab Cottage is grade II listed - buildings under this grading are considered to be "nationally important and of special interest".

Breakfast & Snacks

We take great pride in our breakfast at The Minadab Cottage supporting our local producers as much as possible.

Start your day with freshly squeezed orange juice, cereal and toast with homemade marmalade and jam. Yoghurt, locally pressed apple juice, and fresh fruit salad are also available. Why not have the full English breakfast including local smoked bacon and sausages or for something a little lighter what about scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. We try to make breakfast special for our vegetarian guests too including savory muffins (yum!) or herby mushrooms on toast topped with a poached egg.

Please let us know when booking what your dietary requirements are.

In room snacks

Whilst we don't do evening meals we can on request provide a light snack for you to enjoy in your room or in the dining room but it would need to be booked in advance. This would be a mixture of cheeses and meats with crusty bread and butter for two to share at a cost of £15.00.

Packed Lunches

Packed lunches are available on request and again would need to be booked in advance. Cost is flexible and would depend on what was included.

Dog Friendly

We have three much loved family dogs they are all Weimaraners and their names are Izzy, Poppy and Lucy. We are very happy to welcome responsible dog owners and well-behaved house trained dogs. We apologise that we are not able to take dogs that may be aggressive to people or other dogs.

We make a one off charge of £20.00 per dog per stay. This covers the additional cleaning that has to be done.

Please read the following carefully to ensure that we are the right dog friendly B & B for you and your canine friend.

We are not able to accommodate dogs in the dining room and we request that dogs are not left alone in the guest bedrooms when you go out. Even well trained dogs that are happy to be left at home may get distressed when left in a strange place. This can cause them to behave out of character. If you feel that your dog is ok to be left whilst you eat breakfast then that is fine but, if you have any doubts then we ask you to put them in your car (if it is not too hot). When the weather permits we are happy to serve breakfast outside on the terrace so that you can have your dog with you. We ask that you always clean up after your dog and provide poop bags and a bin for that purpose.

Items for your dog available on request:

  • Blankets
  • Bowls
  • Towels
  • Dog Beds
  • Poop Bags
  • Local Vet Information
  • Dog Treats
  • Torch for late night dog walks

On the opposite side of the road is the access to Moles Park. This is a super dog friendly park which goes all the way down to Teignmouth. There are lots of dog friendly beaches in the area and of course we are only 6 miles from Dartmoor.

We are stockists for Natural Instinct. If you let us know what your requirements are we can arrange to provide your dog with food so you would not have to bring it with you. Prices available on request.

At The Minadab Cottage we are committed to preserving the quality of our beautiful surroundings. We have an excellent relationship with all our local suppliers and continue to look for ways to reduce costs and waste and to improve our environmental efficiency in all areas wherever possible.

We are passionate about our 200 year old historic listed building and we are doing our best to safeguard it for future custodians in the hope that it will still be enjoyed for the next 200 years. We believe that South Devon is a wonderful place and we are very lucky to be here. We hope you enjoy your stay as much as we enjoy living here.

We are able to suggest other local B & B’s if we are not able to help with your booking requirements.

We use ethical eco cleaning products wherever possible and try to ensure that other items such as toilets rolls etc. come with the minimum amount of disposable packaging from eco friendly suppliers.

We have recently taken part in a study by The Centre for Business and Climate Solutions at Exeter University to see how The Minadab Cottage rates in regards to environmental and climate sustainability and they were able to help us in areas where changes could be made to improve insulation, energy and water consumption throughout the business.

We have replaced all the bulbs in the Cottage for LED bulbs that drastically reduces the amount of electricity used that in turn reduces our carbon footprint. A good example would be that the equivalent for a 60w bulb is now only 3w.

We have duel flush toilets so that a small flush can be used and we have also changed the electric showers for 9.5kw showers that should improve water flow.

We have a commercial dishwasher that only uses 3 litres of water per 2 minute cycle.

For guests that are with us for an extended stay we launder the towels every other day and the bed linen every fourth day unless our guest request more frequent changes. This reduces the amount of water and detergent we use.

We recycle all of our food waste together with the usual cans, bottles cardboard etc. This means that the amount of waste going to landfill is significantly reduced.

We source our produce from local suppliers whenever possible. We have spent some time choosing suppliers that we feel have a similar passion for quality as we do.

Our traditional butchers are G Redfern & Son in Teignmouth make their own sausages in a variety of combinations. We have tried them all and for us their cumberland sausages are simply outstanding. Their bacon is sliced and packed on the premises lightly smoked and full of flavour.

Our freshly ground coffee and coffee beans come from Limini Coffee who have this to say about the way their coffee is sourced;

“All our coffee is sourced ethically by our suppliers who freshly roast our coffee to order for us in traditional coffee roasting drums with the latest profiling technology. The coffee comes from over ten different countries and is sourced on a quality first principle and cupped blind by their coffee experts. The coffee growers receive a payment for their coffee which is above the Fairtrade minimum price and often a lot higher as quality comes at a price”

All the varieties of teas and chocolate that we offer are all fairtrade.

Our Organic Free Range Eggs come from Orchard Organic Farm which is very much a family run business in Stokeinteignhead just six miles from the cottage.

Vegetables are from our local greengrocers Tibbs in Teignmouth and also from Milfords in Exeter.

We make all our own bread, crumpets and english muffins using organic flour from Shipton Mills in Gloucester. We also make all our own biscuits and scones together with our own preserves made from locally picked fruit.

We have wonderful local transport links and are able to say that once you arrive that our public transport whether it be bus, train or ferry can take you anywhere you need to go. It is very reliable and reasonable priced. This means that you can enjoy our beautiful surroundings whilst helping to preserve the environment in a very stress free way.

The nearest bus stop is right outside the cottage and is called The Minadab Stop. This is services by the no. 2 and 11 bus service from Teignmouth. The nearest train station is in Teignmouth just a mile away.
